ATrade resident since 1993, Steve Thomas's big break came from a
most unlikely source. Arriving in London in 1987, Steve became regular
club-goer at the infamous Shoom which gave him the inspiration to
create his own music and within weeks of owning some decks he secured
a residency at the groundbreaking Labyrinth in London. It was when
Laurence Malice heard him here one night, he was asked to fill in
at Trade. Steve played, rocked the joint, and was offered a Trade
residency the next week - a post he has held for the last 9 years.
Steve
is still a firm favourite at Trade, but his appeal has spread and
spread since then, resulting in worldwide recognition. UK guest
spots have included Cream, Sundissential, Vague, BugJam (10,000
people), Ministry Of Sound, and another weekly residency at DTPM.
Worldwide, he has been a summer resident for Trade in Ibiza at Privilege
for 4 years, and a regular in Japan, US, South Africa, Hong Kong
and Canada all alongside his regular gigs in Europe. One of Steve's
highlights has to be his residency alongside Danny Tenaglia at Twilo
in New York. This came about via Trade, whose DJs played in the
second room
all except Steve. He was the ONLY person EVER to
play a two hour prime time slot in the middle of Tenaglia's set,
not once but every time he played there.
Steve's
musical style is based around house, and his tough tech-house sound.
But what puts him ahead musically is his intuiton and skill at putting
unlikely tracks together. He is a complete perfectionist but is
unafraid to experiment and for the past four years has been voted
into the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ's.
Steve
developed the hugely successful Tripoli Trax, and releases his tracks
under guises such as 'The Experts', 'Fruitloop' and 'N.O.K' as well
as under his own name. Recently he has been working on tracks for
another successful label; Tinrib Recordings, producing adrenaline
pumping tracks like 'The Leader' and 'What is Love.' He has remixed
numerous other singles including records that charted in the UK
Top 10, Tall Paul - Rok Da House for one. Steve also compiled and
mixed three of the Trade Compilation Albums and 'The Best of Tripoli
Trax' and is due to compile the next DTPM compilation.
Voted
'DJ of the Month' in Muzik, Steve has played many times live on
Kiss FM, Danny Rampling's Radio One show and has guested on Radio
One's Essential Mix.
As
one of the innovaters of the hard house sound with Tony DeVit, Steve's
unique sound has been reknowned for its smoothness - whilst never
being harsh or bangin'. He has recently developed a fresher more
melodic and sexy style which is winning fans wherever he travels.
These days, that's everywhere from Amsterdam to Australia, Stockholm
to Shanghai.
To
hear Steve live is to experience one of the finest DJs that the
dance music scene has to offer.
