In
1991 he created the independent labels TRIBAL America I TRIBAL United
Kingdom Records. Within five years, TRIBAL grew to be the genre's
most respected underground imprint. As label president I head of
A&R (and as U.S. managing director for William Orbit's Guerilla
Records, which Tribal distributed in the U.S.), Di Stefano found
and developed many of the biggest names in contemporary dance music.
Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Junior Vasquez, Murk, Underground Sound
of Lisbon and more began their careers with Di Stefano or watched
them grow under his guidance and direction. In
early 1996, TRIBAL closed when parent company IRS Records went out
of business. Later, in August, Di Stefano launched TWISTED Records,
a new label built from the remains of TRIBAL. The entire TRIBAL
artist roster and label staff moved to TWISTED, a joint-venture
with Universal / MCA, where Di Stefano continued to build a trademark
brand name and very successful artists (Funky Green Dogs, Club 69,
Celeda). Its three-year deal with Universal / MCA just ended, TWISTED
is again being restructured by Di Stefano, who is preparing to re-launch
the label in the Spring of 2001. The first releases include productions
by long-time collaborator and friend Danny Tenaglia. Di Stefano
started djing while at university in the late 1980's, and has since
used his unique sound and underground style to promote his record
labels and artists. "I prefer that people Ieave a club with
TWISTED or TRIBAL in their minds. I don't care if they remember
my name, as long as they leave with a TWISTED memory." Rob has traveled throughout Europe and North America, and has played alongside some of the world's best-known jocks: Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Cevin Fisher, Phil Perry, DJ Vibe, DJ Pierre, Angel Moraes, Jaydee, Peter Rauhofer, Jim Masters, Tony Humphries, Salt City Orchestra, The Murk Boys, Deep Dish, Ashley Beedle and many others in some of the world's most prestigious clubs (Twilo NYC, Ministry of Sound London, Lux Lisbon...).
